Cozy Up with Some Red
Here at TSNY we love a daring design complete with bold choices and a unique perspective. Simply using color in my work has set me apart from others, and quite honestly, the wash of white that has taken over the design world is giving me a headache that only a tall glass of red can cure. So! If white on white on white is the most groundbreaking idea you can come up with, I’m writing this for YOU... Here are all of the fearless ways to design with my favorite color… RED!
1. Add an Accent Wall

Adding an accent wall to your space is never a bad idea, especially when paired with neutrals. Thibaut is one of my favorite sources for textured wallpaper like the one used in this Upper West Side apartment. And if wallpaper isn’t your thing, paint works just the same. My point is, when contemplating adding an accent wall to your home, always do it.
2. Invest in Throw Pillows

I’m not judging if you aren’t looking for something serious. I get it. Commitment is scary. So, for those who are a little more reluctant to put down a drop cloth and start painting your walls, invest in a few throw pillows to accompany your sofa. Jayson Home is usually my first stop when picking out pillows for a space, like the ones in this NoHo loft.
3. Hang Wall Art

Wall art is a really easy way to incorporate color into any space. Like in this Financial District apartment, I enjoy pairing canvas’ together rather than opting for a single, larger piece. When I’m not creating the art myself, I’m constantly turning to websites like Etsy and Society6 for their standout pieces.
4. Do It Yourself
I put a twist on your typical gallery wall with the bold frames I used in this Midtown commercial space. And the best part? Achieving this red look doesn’t have to put you in the red. Bed Bath & Beyond is my secret go-to for inexpensive frames, paired with a few coats of your favorite red paint. Who can resist a good DIY (especially when the results look this amazing)? Your wallet and your walls will thank you.
5. Make it Maroon

I am fully aware that reading one blog post won’t make you release all inhibitions, so try deepening the red into a sultry shade of maroon. It’s much less alarming while still giving your space the life that it needs. The wallpaper I picked for this Upper East Side apartment is the perfect dose of color for this neighborhood.
My last tip is to stop being scared. Pick out paint colors and fabric samples (many stores like West Elm will even send you samples for free), lay things out so you can visualize, and see what combinations appeal to you. It’s most important to start somewhere; I prefer to start with my glass topped off and then get to work. Cheers!
